It is a part of the Support Squadron in the UK Landing Force Command Support Group, the signals and intelligence unit of the Brigade. It consists of 6 four-man teams who work ahead of the main force conducting medium-level reconnaissance and reports directly back to Brigade Headquarters. They are often deployed in advance of the main amphibious landings. Members of the BPT are known as Recce Leaders and are trained in reconnaissance, signals, First Aid and Mountain & cold weather warfare. They are also qualified as Sharpshooters on the L96A1 Sniper Rifle; and, like members of the Special Boat Service, as Parachutists. Like SBS Marines, Recce leaders are distinguishable by the wearing of the parachute wings badge on the shoulder of the right sleeve on their uniforms.
