The luminosity class II in the Yerkes spectral classification is given to bright giants. These are stars which straddle the boundary between giants and supergiants, and the classification is in general given to giant stars with exceptionally high luminosity, but which are not sufficiently bright or massive to be classified as supergiants. In astronomy, stellar classification is a classification of stars based initially on photospheric temperature and its associated spectral characteristics, and subsequenly refined in terms of other characteristics. ... According to the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, a red giant is a large non-main sequence star of stellar classification K or M; so-named because of the reddish appearance of the cooler giants. Examples include Aldebaran and Arcturus. ... A supergiant is a very large type of star which is ~10 to 50 solar masses on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. ... Therefore, a red giant must be a shorter stage because their are less of them.
They are red giant and supergiant stars, both P I and P II, with luminosities about 100x that of the sun.
Nucleosynthesis: when a star first becomes a red giant, thermal pulses, sparked by the triple-alpha process, burn helium and carbon, which is then transformed to oxygen.
A Bright New House - 9/6/2004 - Dixie Contractor (1088 words)
When cable giant Bright House Networks decided to build a new regional corporate office facility recently in a Class A office park in St. Petersburg, Fla., it had several options to consider.
Bright House chose to take that second approach, going with a custom-built facility — and an innovative application of tilt-up concrete construction was a key to making it happen on time and within budget.
Bright House's new three-story building, with 166,000 square feet of space and a 55,000-square-foot building footprint, is located in Echelon Development Company's Carillon Park, one of Pinellas County's premiere office parks.
