Brigitte Fontaine was born in Morlaix, a town in northern Brittany, in 1940.
Brigitte, a solitary child given to daydreaming, discovered the exciting world of theatre in her childhood and the talented youngster soon progressed from reading plays in her bedroom to performing with a number of amateur theatre groups in Morlaix and Brest.
Brigitte Fontaine would continue to take a stand on various political and humanitarian issues throughout the rest of her career, demonstrating on behalf of AIDS sufferers, homeless people and 'les sans-papiers' (France's growing population of illegal immigrants).
