Encyclopedia > Brisance

Brisance is a measure of the rapidity with which an explosive develops its maximum pressure. This article is concerned solely with chemical explosives. ... This article is about pressure in the physical sciences. ...

HEY THERE DREW HOW ARE YOU!In addition to strength, explosive materials display a second characteristic, which is their shattering effect or brisance (from the French briser, to break), which is distinguished from their total work capacity. This characteristic is of practical importance in determining the effectiveness of an explosion in fragmenting shells, bomb casings, grenades, and the like. The rapidity with which an explosive reaches its peak pressure is a measure of its brisance.

A brisant explosive is one in which the maximum pressure is attained so rapidly that a shock wave is formed, and the net effect is to shatter (by shock resonance)the material surrounding or in contact with the supersonic detonation wave created by this explosive. Thus brisance is a measure of the shattering ability of an explosive. Preparing C-4 explosive This article is concerned solely with chemical explosives. ... For other uses, see Bomb (disambiguation). ... Grenade may refer to: The well-known hand grenade commonly used by soldiers. ... Introduction The shock wave is one of several different ways in which a gas in a supersonic flow can be compressed. ...

The sand crush test is commonly employed to determine the relative brisance in comparison to TNT. No single test is capable of directly comparing the explosive properties of two or more compounds;[citation needed] it is important to examine the data from several such tests[citation needed] (sand crush, trauzl, and so forth) in order to gauge relative brisance. True values for comparison will require field experiments.[citation needed] R-phrases S-phrases Related Compounds Related compounds picric acid hexanitrobenzene Except where noted otherwise, data are given for materials in their standard state (at 25 Â°C, 100 kPa) Infobox disclaimer and references Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a chemical compound with the formula C6H2(NO2)3CH3. ... Trauzl lead block test, also called Trauzl test or just Trauzl, is a test used to measure the strength of explosive materials. ...

One of the most brisant conventional explosives is cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (also known as RDX).[citation needed] Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, also known as RDX, cyclonite, hexogen, and T4, is an nitroamine and explosive material widely used by the military. ...

Brisance (Gerald L. Hurst) (4955 words)
In my opinion, the most logical units for brisance would be pressure generated in the unconfined state, i,e, "detonation pressure" as opposed to "bore hole pressure." These are the two terms used in commercial explosive work to indicate brisance and the potential for useful work output (heave).
One definition of brisance is "The ability to accelerate metal." The "tone" of the explosion is related to the expansion of the gas cloud after brisance has done its work.
In each case the brisance is determined by the energy and density of the material, assuming it is shot in a sufficiently large diameter.

The rapidity with which an explosive develops its maximum pressure is a measure of the quality known as brisance.
A brisant explosive is one in which the maximum pressure is attained so rapidly that a shock wave is formed, and the net effect is to shatter material surrounding or in contact with it.
Thus brisance is a measure of the shattering ability of an explosive.
