Background to the merger

Fitzroy was formed on the 26th of September 1883 at the Brunswick Hotel and was a founding member of the VFL. They wore blue shorts and their jersey and socks were maroon. Brunswick Street Oval in Fitzroy became the club’s home ground.

Formed on the 6th of October 1986, the Brisbane Bears were a young club with not much luck and during the club’s short ten year history the Bears were unable to win any Premierships. With Peter Knights as the club’s first coach, the Bears home ground became Carrara at the Gold Coast and being the first Queensland club in the VFL, this code was only just beginning. But in 1993 the Bears moved permanently to Brisbane, The Gabba.

On the 4th of July 1996 the Australian Football League (AFL) approved the first ever club merger in Victorian Football League (VFL) and AFL history, between the Fitzroy Lions and the Brisbane Bears.

By combining these two clubs a great team was created. A team that not only had a new club’s youth, but also an old club’s experience. On the 4th of July 1996 it was decided that the Brisbane Lions would be created. The Lions were officially launched on the 1st of November 1996, joining the national competition in 1997.

Post Merger

During these four years the Brisbane Lions were the most dominant team of the modern era, and they have definitely earned their place in the history books.

Many other clubs began modelling their sides on the big bodied, intimidating Brisbane side.

2005

The Lions had an inconsistent season in 2005, but fell away badly towards the end, losing many games by very large margins and finishing a disappointing eleventh and out of the finals for only the second time in the club's history. Injuries and the retirements of premiership players such as Marcus Ashcroft, Alastair Lynch, Martin Pike, Shaun Hart and Craig McRae had taken its toll and the club was forced to play many young players earlier than they would otherwise have done. The club, in a rebuilding phase, was spearheaded by some of the younger stars of the triple-premiership era such as Black, Jonathan Brown and Luke Power. 2006

The Lions began the 2006 season poorly, but looked dangerous when key forward Jonathan Brown was in form.

Long term injuries to key players such as Nigel Lappin, Chris Scott, Ashley McGrath, Richard Hadley, Anthony Corrie and key ruckman Jamie Charman forced coach Leigh Matthews to blood an unprecendented number of youngsters and rookies, many of them showing enormous promise, with AFL Rising Star nominations to Michael Rischitelli, Cheynee Stiller and Matthew Moody and the emergence of rookie Jason Roe. To cap off the horror run, Jonathan Brown's serious back injury all but extinguished the club's finals aspirations. Nigel Lappin (born 21 June 1976) is an Australian Rules footballer. ... Commentators began to note the loss of the aggression, size and hardness at the man and the ball of the young team in comparison to the triple premiership squad.

As results continued to be inconsistent in 2006 crowd attendances have declined for the Lions. Most notably, 2006 found the team losing more home games than ever before, reducing the Gabba's status as a fortress that intimidated opposition teams. Brisbane chief executive Michael Bowers has said that although core support for the team has remained strong, general sports fans are watching other codes. "In Brisbane, unlike Melbourne, people have to make the decision: Do I go to the Broncos? Do I go to see the Reds? Do I go to the Lions? They're the numbers dropping off." Memberships have also declined, decreasing by 8.5% from 2005 to 2006.[1]

Justin Leppitsch and Brad Scott announced their retirements during the season, rumours of key players such as Michael Voss and Mal Michael losing motivation to continue to play and stuck in negotiations with the club over off-field issues. A controversial feud between the club and Jason Akermanis divided supporters of the club and received massive publicity. The result was that he would be traded at the end of the season.
