Bristol is a town located in Lincoln County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,644.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 161.7 km˛ (62.5 mi˛). 91.8 km˛ (35.5 mi˛) of it is land and 69.9 km˛ (27.0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 43.23% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,644 people, 1,203 households, and 801 families residing in the town. The population density is 28.8/km˛ (74.6/mi˛). There are 2,290 housing units at an average density of 24.9/km˛ (64.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 99.05% White, 0.11% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.26% from two or more races. 0.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,203 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.64.


In the town the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $38,400, and the median income for a family is $45,184. Males have a median income of $31,627 versus $19,800 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,821. 6.0% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

At Bristol village are a lumber-mill, a grist and threshing-mill, a block-factory, cooper's-shop, etc. At Pernaquid are lumber, grist and carding-mills, a fish-oil and scrap factory, etc. South Bristol has three oil companies, a shipyard and a lobster-canning factory.
