Battle of Crete - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (5747 words)
The key formed units were the New Zealand 2nd Division (less the 6th Brigade and division headquarters, which had been sent on to Egypt), the Australian 19th Brigade Group and the British 14th Infantry Brigade.
In common with most British tank units at the time, these tanks lacked general purpose high-explosive ammunition for the 2-pdr cannon on the Matildas, possessing only armor piercing rounds which were not effective against infantry.
At the village of Stilos, the 5th New Zealand Brigade and the 2/7th Australian battalion held off a German mountain battalion which had begun a flanking manœuvre, but were forced to withdraw for lack of air and artillery support, despite their superior numbers.
British 42nd Infantry Brigade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (196 words)
The British Army's 42nd Infantry Brigade was originally a brigade of the 14th (Light) Division in World War I. It was re-formed during the Second World War as a security force to protect Lines of Communication in North Africa.
In November 1943 the brigade H.Q. was redesignated as the H.Q. of the 57th Infantry Division for deception purposes.
Today's brigade primarily perpetuates the history of the 42nd (East Lancashire) Division, formed as part of the Territorial Army in 1907 and which fought in World War I and World War II.
