During the Second World War the 2nd Infantry Brigade saw active service in many of the major campaigns that the British fought in, from France to Tunisia in North Africa and finally Italy. Through out the war it was part of the 1st Infantry Division. It is now part of the 4th Division as 2nd (South East) Brigade. In the House of Commons on 25 November 2002 the Secretary of State for Defence said that the Brigade (along with 52 Brigade) was being re-roled from a regional brigade headquarters to provide better command and control arrangements for light infantry role battalions, all of which are currently deployable. Consisting of 15 (TA), 49 (TA) and 24th Infantry Brigades, its war role would have been to cross the Channel and protect the corps rear area in the event of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe.
Following further reshuffing, 52nd Infantry Brigade was reformed as an operational, rather than regional, brigade consisting of several light infantry battalions, and will leave the formation to join 3 Division in 2007.

In 1972 the 2nd Battalion was inactivated and in 1987 the 1st Battalion was inactivated.
The 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 503rd Infantry Regiment was reactivated on 16 December 2001 as a parachute infantry battalion and assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed at Vicenza, Italy.
The 66th Infantry Platoon (Combat Tracker) was activated on 15 February 1968 and served with the 25th Infantry Division until inactivated in Vietnam on 15 March 1971 with the departure of the 2nd Brigade.
