The British Rail Class 08 is a class of diesel locomotive designed for shunting. It was the standard BR diesel-electric shunter, based on the LMS 12033 series (later TOPS Class 11). Production started in 1953 and when it finished in 1962, the class had become the most numerous of all British classes, numbering 1193 in total. Since their introduction rail freight has primarily moved to fixed-rake bulk freight traffic and intermodal freight operations which reduce or remove the need for shunting. Therefore only a few class 08 locomotives remain in service today. The locomotives were built at the BR Works of Crewe, Darlington, Derby and Doncaster. Class 08/9 locomotives were modified from the standard class by being given headlights and cut-down cabs in which the overall height was reduced to 11’ 10” (3.61 m), for use on the Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway up to Cwm Mawr. The USRA 0-6-0 was the smallest of the USRA standard locomotives USRA Standard classes designed and produced during the brief Government control of the railroads through the United States Railroad Administration USRA during World War I.
The Pennsylvania Railroad rostered over 1,200 0-6-0 types over the years, which were classed as type B on that system.
When diesel shunters began to be introduced, the 0-6-0 type became the most common also; many of the British Railways shunter types were 0-6-0s, including British Rail Class 03 Class 03, the standard 'light' shunter, and British Rail Class 08 Class 08 and British Rail Class 09 Class 09, the standard heavier shunters.
