British Rail Class 55 at AllExperts (1116 words)
British Rail assigned Class 55 to the twenty-two English Electric Type 5 express diesel locomotives built in 1961/2 and used for high-speed service on Britain's East Coast Main Line between London King's Cross and Edinburgh.
However, it was soon realised that the class had a limited future; it was not considered economic to maintain such a small and totally non-standard class of locomotive for secondary services, and the end of the decade saw the first withdrawals from service.
Another Class 55 in the rail blue livery passes briefly in the opposite direction.
History of the Class 101/2s (632 words)
Class 101 was the AEC engined cars, and 102 for the Leyland variety.
Three vehicles were the testbed for British Rail’s DMU refurbishment scheme in the ‘70s, which led to hundred’s of vehicles given life extensions.
At present few vehicles have made it to preservation, although with the remaining vehicles still in passenger traffic around Glasgow and Manchester due to be withdrawn in the next six months, that is set to change.
