The class 185 trains are designed to be faster at climbing hills, and have a maximum speed of 100 mph. TransPennine Express expect these faster trains to be able to make up time more easily should they be delayed. In addition, due to their higher axle weight and route availability, which is RA 5 compared to the RA 2 of a Class 158, they are too heavy to run at the faster speed limits designed for lighter trains that are in place on many parts of the TransPennine network. Future operations On 31 October 2006, it was announced that from December 2007, subject to contract, TransPennine Express will operate frequent services between Manchester Airport and Glasgow/Edinburgh, replacing the current Manchester Piccadilly-Scotland service provided by Virgin Cross Country. It was announced that the 100 mph Class 185s would be used to run the services, replacing the faster Class 220s and 221s currently used by Virgin, although there is currently much debate over whether they will have enough units to cover a frequent service to Scotland, and whether the 100mph units can be effectively timetabled to fit in with Virgin West Coast's 125mph Class 390-operated service on the predominantly double track WCML north of Preston. A major uncertainty at the moment is if the 3-car 185 fleet will be able to cope with the growth in passenger numbers in the future. The addition of a fourth coach into some of the new trains is a possibility and has been mentioned regularly by many sources, but the government are still assessing TransPennine Express's long-term viability before any more money is committed to the franchise.
Response The 185s are attracting a mixed response from passengers and TransPennine Express staff members. Compromises have clearly been made between their role as long-distance inter-regional trains (for example Manchester Airport to Newcastle is about three and a quarter hours) and their more commuter-oriented use by relatively short-distance commuters in peak hours (e.g. the Liverpool-Warrington-Manchester and Huddersfield-Dewsbury-Leeds-Garforth-York corridors). The "inter city"-style 2+1 first class seating, electrical power outlets throughout the train, large windows with excellent seat alignment, and the improved seating in standard class have attracted much favourable comment. The luggage space on the 185s is not as suitable for larger suitcases as on the 158s.
General ambience The general ambience of the trains is rather more commuter-like than the 158s, with wide double doors at 1/3 and 2/3 of the way down the carriages (rather than the usual long-distance train narrow doors at the carriage ends) and increased standing room. The loss of seats relative to an equivalent three-coach 158 means that more passengers have to stand at peak times. The air conditioning on board these trains has, in the past, attracted many complaints from passengers as it was simply set too cold. It is also rather noisy and draughty. However, a software modification has now been completed and the temperature is somewhat improved. Complaints from passengers regarding the temperature have decreased.
Engine and ride quality The Cummins QSK19 engines have proven to be both very thirsty in terms of fuel and oil, using both to excess. As of January 2007, the oil usage was approximately 2.5 gallons per engine per day, hence many of the units having oil splattered up the side of them. Another disadvantage is the higher noise levels of these engines compared to the older 158 units. This is noticeable on board especially within first class and certainly on the platform, but the real impact is felt by people living near the line. It is made worse still by the 'triple-peaking' effect as the train passes, due to the three motors on each traction unit.
Opening the Doors Many passengers get annoyed by how long it takes staff to open the doors on some trains. It will often take upto a minute after the train stops before the guard manages to open them successfully, often because they are in the wrong part of the train and have to walk down to a control panel. This can make the trains late or lead to less time for boarding/alighting. The main reason for this is due to there only being 2 places to operate the doors from.
