Seven vehicles were built, formed into 210001 (four car set) and 210002 (three car set). The vehicles were initially given numbers in the DMMU series (5xxxx) but quickly renumbered into the DEMU series (6xxxx).


Sets 210001 and 210002 operated in various parts of the country on trial (as did the prototype railbuses, both the single cars and the Class 140 set). The cars led different lives after BR. The two driving trailers (and the intermediate trailer of the three car set together with one trailer from the four car set) were used in the Class 457 Networker development train. Both the driving cars subsequently passed to the Suburban Electric Railway Association but one was subsequently transferred to HSBC Rail (potentially for future use in a Class 455 set). There was a plan for a driving motor to be saved also but, after their storage at Eastleigh for many years (still in blue & grey livery), both driving motors were scrapped in the late 1990s/early 2000s. The British Rail Class 950 is a diesel multiple unit that was purpose-built for departmental use as a track assessment unit.
It was built in 1987 using the same bodyshell as the Class 150/1 "Sprinter" units that were built from 1985-1986.
It was originally classified as a Class 180 test unit, but since this designation is now used by the new First Great Western "Adelante" units, it has been reclassified into the departmental series.
British Rail Class 457 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (712 words)
Initially the test unit was formed for trials on the 750V DC third rail system of the Southern Region, and was numbered 457001 (as with all Southern Region electric multiple units only the last four digits of the unit number were actually carried).
The unit was renumbered as Class 316 number 316999.
To enable it to work on the AC electrification, a pantograph trailer from a Class 313 unit was inserted into the set, replacing one of the intermediate trailers.
