Encyclopedia > British Rail Class 41

Two distinct types of locomotive have been allocated Class 41.

Prototype 'Warship Class'

Prior to the construction of the D800 series diesel-hydraulic 'Warship Class' (later Classes 42 and 43), five prototype locomotives of A1A-A1A wheel arrangement were constructed; D600_D604. These locomotives were not as successful as their production cousins in Class 42, and all were withdrawn by the end of the 1960s. Not one has survived into preservation.

Prototype High Speed Train Power Car

The power cars of the prototype High Speed Train were originally allocated Class 41, before the train was reclassified as a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit, and the whole set became Class 252. They were of Bo-Bo wheel arrangement.

North British Locomotive Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (533 words)
A typical example of this was the grades of steel that were used for exhaust manifolds in the NBL-built Class 43s - frequent manifold failures lead to loss of turbocharger drive gas pressure and hence loss of power.
British Rail had cause to return many NBL diesel locomotives to their builder for repair under warranty but they also insisted on a 3 month guarantee on all repairs (a requirement not levied on BR's own workshops).
As such, the Class 84s were refurbished in 1972 and pressed back into service, being finally withdrawn from 1978 to 1980 following delivery of newer and more powerful Class 87 locomotives.
British Rail Class 50: Information From Answers.com (2548 words)
In 1974 the northern WCML was electrified, and the Class 50 fleet was displaced by new Class 87 electrics.
The class were again used for Western Region services on the GWML out of Paddington, and on the West of England Main Line from Waterloo to Salisbury and Exeter.
Four Class 47 locomotives were similarly treated, and a Class 117 diesel multiple unit was repainted in chocolate and cream livery.
