Since 1998, an important ambition set by the British and the Egyptian Governments was the formation of a British University in Egypt. Such an institution would produce graduates of UK standards to enter key sectors of the Egyptian economy, particularly in the areas of engineering, computer science, and business studies. Planning continued and financial support was provided by a group of prominent Egyptian business and public figures, principal amongst whom were Mr. Mohamed Farid Khamis Chairman of Oriental Weavers and Mr. Raed Hashem, Vice-Chairman of MAC Carpets. In November 2004, following a concordat between Tony Blair, British Prime Minister and Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, and with strong support from the British Embassy and the British Council, a government decree was issued establishing the British University in Egypt. The first phase of the University campus was already under construction and the University welcomed its first cohort of undergraduate students in September 2005. Development of the campus has progressed rapidly and the next phase of new buildings and facilities was completed in early March 2006. Included in this phase will be a large scale auditorium and state-of-the-art conference facilities, new Library and administration/academic staff buildings and a recreational complex.


The British University in Egypt is located in the area of El Sherouk, one of the new residential and industrial cities in Egypt on the outskirts of Cairo. The University campus covers approximately 40 acres (fedans) of land. The available space within the buildings is 27000 sq.m.
