XXXCorps was assigned to hold the northern part of the line (though at this point, it was reinforced by units from XIII Corps, including the 1st South African Division since it was in extremely bad shape).
On the July 10, 1943, XXXCorps was sent to invade the Italian island of Sicily.
XXXCorps (under Lieutenant General Oliver Leese) was to compose the Left Flank of the British Eighth Army.
Garden consisted primarily of XXXCorps, and initially spearheaded by the Guards Armoured Division, an elite British Armoured Formation, with the 43rd Wessex and 50th Northumbrian Infantry Divisions in reserve.
XXXCorps would therefore be facing very limited resistance on their route up highway 69, and little armour.
XXXCorps soon arrived in Eindhoven, and by that night were bivouacked south of Son while they waited for the Royal Engineers to erect the Bailey bridge.
