This is a list of comedians of British birth or famous mainly in Britain. Many of the comedypanel-game regulars and sitcom actors may not be regarded as comedians by some people but they are included here because this page uses the word "comedian" in its broadest possible sense.
BritishComedy, in film, radio and television, is known for its consistently quirky characters, plots and settings, and has produced some of the most famous and memorable comic actors and characters in the last fifty years.
Britishcomedy films are legendary, but among the most notable are the Ealing comedies, the 1950s satires of the Boulting Brothers, and innumerable popular comedy series including the St Trinian's films, the "Doctor" series, and the long-running Carry On films.
As the traditional British situation comedy is produced by just one or two writers its comedy is often of a less exuberant nature than situation comedies produced in other countries.
The British Romantic Comedies seem to be especially popular lately with their actors and actresses shooting to fame in both the UK and the US and making a huge impact on the acting scene in general.
The British accent is also one of the top rated accents that appeal to both men and women in the USA so this too could be a factor.
The British fashion scene also plays a part in the success of certain films, the costume designs and the set designs are usually made by British designers and this really shows in the end effect.
