Encyclopedia > British Rail Class 499

British Rail allocated Class 499 to a fleet of six luggage vans used in electric multiple unit formations on boat train services between London and Dover. They were allocated Southern Region class TLV (meaning Trailer Luggage Van).

They were converted from former Brake Guard vehicles in 1968 to supplement the Class 419 Motor Luggage Van fleet. However, following the decline of boat train traffic, they were all stored in 1975. After a period in use as match wagons for transferring new Class 430 and 491 units from York Works, they were all taken into departmental stock initially as stores vans, but later as breakdown train tool vans.

Registered London Underground Stock

After 1994, Railtrack allocated Class 499 to identify London Underground electric multiple units used on its lines, in particular the sets used on the Bakerloo Line services to Harrow and Wealdstone. However, this did not involve any renumbering of the actual stock involved, and was merely for electronic records.

TOPS - UK Railways - A Wikia wiki (1513 words)
In the mid to late 1960s British Railways (soon to be rebranded as British Rail) was searching around for ways to increase efficiency, and came across the TOPS system being used by the Canadian National Railways.
No class of locomotive or multiple unit numbered over a thousand examples, so the last three digits were used for the individual number (between 001 and 999) in that class.
Locomotives are assigned classes from 01 to 98, with diesel locomotives assigned classes 01 to 69, DC electric locomotives between 70 and 79, AC electric locomotives 80-96, departmental locos (those not in revenue-earning use) 97, and steam locomotives 98.
British Rail Class 930: Information from Answers.com (907 words)
Class 930, no. 930004 at London Victoria on 18th March 2003, seen painted in Railtrack's blue and lime green livery.
The British Rail Class 930 was reserved for former Southern Region electrical multiple units and diesel-electric multiple units converted for departmental use.
When TOPS class numbers were applied, these units mostly retained their existing numbers as the last three digits of their new TOPS class number.
