He was discovered by Chicago Tribune book critic Bob Cromie while pitching in Birmingham, Alabama in 1978. He made his debut later that season at the age of 19. Burns did not become as full time major leaguer until 1980 when he won 15 games. In 1983 he helped the White Sox into the ALCS against the Baltimore Orioles, pitching 9 1/3 innings before surrendering a home run to Tito Landrum in the fourth and final game of the series. 1985 would prove to be a bittersweet year for Burns as he won 18 games for Chicago, but was traded on December 12 with Glen Braxton and Mike Soper to the New York Yankees for Ron Hassey and Joe Cowley. Sadly he would never pitch an innning for New York, or any other team, as his career came to a premature end due to a chronic, degenerative hip condition. Britt is an instructor in the radiography program at Northwestern State University, Shreveport, La. Her talk also covered the methods used to report abuse along with suggestions for handling reporting and ways to comfort the child in question.
Britt’s interest was piqued by the way the state investigation focused on the parents as much as the caregiver who brought the child in for care.
Britt says of her students, “They will be the only advocate that child has during that exam time, their voice.” A caring, sensitive, and responsive radiographer can accomplish more than one trying only to finish a task.
