Boundaries

Bromley and Chislehurst constituency covers the northern part of the London Borough of Bromley between the towns of Bromley and Chislehurst, and the central part of the borough as far south as Hayes and Bromley Common.

History

With the exception of the Mottingham council estate, located to the north of Chislehurst, this constituency consists almost entirely of prosperous leafy suburbia. It is extremely Conservative territory, indeed it is one of the very safest and most stubbornly Conservative areas in Britain.

Partly this is because there are so few ethnic minorities here, even on the Mottingham estate. The character of the constituency, despite its wealth, is more one of prosperous small businesses rather than highly-educated professionals, and this further increases the Conservative domination of the area.

Harold Macmillan was the MP for Bromley until his retirement in 1964, when he was succeeded by John Hunt. Hunt, who was very much regarded as being on the left of the party, held the seat (which was renamed Ravensbourne in 1974) until 1997. The former Chislehurst constituency also had a tradition of electing centrist Conservative MPs, in the form of Patricia Hornsby-Smith and (from 1974) Roger Sims. When the Chislehurst constituency was merged with part of Ravensbourne in 1997 to form Bromley and Chislehurst, both Hunt and Sims retired, and the eccentric right-winger Eric Forth was selected as the Conservative candidate for this very safe seat.

The boundary changes that will come into force before the next General Election will remove the leafy suburban wards of Bromley Common and Hayes to Beckenham constituency, and the Cray Valley West council estate will move into the seat from Orpington constituency. This will certainly reduce the Conservative majority somewhat but the seat will remain safely Conservative.
