Encyclopedia > Bronislaw Malinowski (athlete)
Alternate use: see Bronislaw Malinowski for the anthropologist.

Bronisław Malinowski (June 4, 1951 - September 27, 1981) was a Polish athlete who won a gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow in the 3000 m steeplechase.

Born in Nowe, Poland, Malinowski came 4th at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He then won gold at the 1974 European Championships. The period from those games to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal was marked with a great rivalry with the Swedish athlete Anders Gärderud. At those Olympics Malinowski won the silver medal behind Gärderud, although both athletes went under the old world record.

Garderud retired in 1976, but Malinowski had to contend with Henry Rono, who set the world record in 1978. Still, Bronislaw beat Rono in a head-to-head that season.

Malinowski's greatest moment of his career came at the 1980 Summer Olympics where he took gold in the 3000 m steeplechase. This time he steadied himself and let the front-runner Filbert Bayi dictate the pace.

Sadly, at the age of 30, Bronislaw was killed in a car accident on the 27th September 1981.
