It is part of the 4 "Dale" shopping malls which include: Southdale (in Edina), Ridgedale (in Minnetonka), and Rosedale (in Roseville). Unlike the other three "Dales," Brookdale has clearly seen better days. Kohl's is not actually in the mall proper but instead on an adjacent property across the street. Two of four anchor store locations are empty. Until 2003, the third anchor was Mervyn's, but the Mervyn's brand was then phased out by the Target Corporation as part of its withdrawal from the department store business, and most of its locations closed, including all in Minnesota. Efforts to draw new retailers have met only limited success and over half of the mall is currently empty. Comparisons have been made between Brookdale's current state and the sad decline of the Apache Plaza mall formerly in nearby Minneapolis. In 2006, the Marshall Field's store will rebranded to become Macy's.
