The Brooklyn Community Board 1 is a local governement unit of the city of New York, encompassing the neighborhood of Flushing Avenue, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Northside, and Southside in the borough of Brooklyn. It is delimited by the Newtown Creek and Queens Borough line on the east, Flushing and Kent Avenue on the south, as well as by the East River on the west. As of 2000, the Community Board has a population of 160,338, up from 155,972 in 1990 and 142,942 in 1980.
Of them (as of 2000), 77,040 (48.0%) are White non hispanic, 8,808 (5.5%) are African-American , 5,730 (63.6%) Asian or Pacific Islander, 192 (0.1%) American Indian or Native Alskan, 3,635 (2.3%) of some other race, 4,488 (2.8%) of two or more race, 60,445 (37.7%) of Hispanic origins.
46.7% of the population benefit from public assistance as of 2004, up from 32.9% in 2000. In 1898 Brooklyn itself became one of five boroughs within the City of Greater New York, and its Williamsburg neighborhood was opened to closer connections with the rest of the new city.
The community was then opened up to thousands of upwardly mobile immigrants and second-generation Americans fleeing the overcrowded slum tenements of Manhattan's Lower East Side.
A significant component of the Italian community on the North Side were immigrants from the city of Nola near Naples.
