Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,054 people, 450 households, and 283 families residing in the city. The population density is 508.7/km² (1,321.8/mi²). There are 519 housing units at an average density of 250.5/km² (650.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.61% White, 7.12% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 450 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.97. In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,438, and the median income for a family is $30,000. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $19,188 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,751. 19.8% of the population and 16.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.5% of those under the age of 18 and 17.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
