Brooks County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 7,976. Its county seat is Falfurrias6. Brooks is named for John Abijah Brooks, a Texas Ranger and legislator.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,444 km˛ (944 mi˛). 2,443 km˛ (943 mi˛) of it is land and 1 km˛ (0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,976 people, 2,711 households, and 2,079 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). There are 3,203 housing units at an average density of 1/km˛ (3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 75.84% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 21.58% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. 91.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,711 households out of which 38.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are married couples living together, 19.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.30% are non-families. 21.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.38.
In the county, the population is spread out with 31.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 23.40% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $18,622, and the median income for a family is $22,473. Males have a median income of $23,051 versus $16,103 for females. The per capita income for the county is $10,234. 40.20% of the population and 36.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 51.70% of those under the age of 18 and 30.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
2004 Election It was one of the few counties in Texas to go Democrat in the 2004 election. Senator John Kerry got 1,820 votes while President George W. Bush only got 844.
