The Brothers of Christian Instruction of St Gabriel is a Catholic Order that is secular in nature. It traces its first roots of existence to St. Louis Marie de Montfort , around 1711. St. Monfort opened a few schools for underprivilaged children in La Rochelle,France.


After the French Revolution , the congregation amalgamated under the guidance of Father Gabriel Deshayes into the Brothers they are today.The name St Gabriel stems from the first chapel of the congregation, which was dedicated to Saint Gabriel. The period of the French Revolution in the history of France covers the years between 1789 and 1799, in which democrats and republicans overthrew the absolute monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church was forced to undergo radical restructuring. ... The order's main concern is Christian education especially for the poor, orphans and the pyshically challenged.Other organizations inspired by Monfortian ideals are the Company of Mary and The Daughters of Wisdom.'Associates' are Gabrielite-linked lay association similarly inspired by Monfortian spirituality.
