- Famous Poet Hugh MacDiarmid taught at BHS at its former location.
- The school has a long history of (spanners). Notable former spanners include Kieran Leach, Gordon Shannen, David Gallagher and Chris Todd. Current spanners include Finbar Southerland-Lockheart, Ryan Young and Shaun Marshall.
- Assistant head teacher Tony Dougan was investigated for war crimes and tried in the Hague in 1992. He was found not guilty. The U.N still regards the acquital of all charges as suspicous due the mysterious disapearence of a key witness the night before he was due to give evidence. The witnesses body was later found stapled to death beside a closed fire door near the courthouse.
