Early Life

Bruce grew up around the corner from his grandparents' dairy farm, near the village of Phoenix, New York. He loved to read children's classics such as Mary Poppins and Doctor Dolittle, along with popular titles like Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, and many comic books. He regrets that he sometimes watched TV when he could have been reading. "After all, mind is a terrible thing to waste!" he says. The first time he can remember thinking to become a writer was in sixth grade. His teacher, Mrs. Crandall, gave his class an extended period of time to write a long story. He loved doing it. He started to work seriously at becoming a writer at the age of seventeen. When he was 19 he married Katherine Dietz. She lived right around the corner from him. She was and still is a wonderful artist and they tried making books together. In 1997 they sold their first book together titled The Foolish Giant.
