Bruce Mather is a composer of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and piano works. He is also active as a pianist, specializing in contemporary music. Mather is notably known for his use of microtonal scales to which he was introduced by Ivan Wyschnegradsky as his disciple. Though he was distrustfull towards microtonal music since he heard Alois Haba's Music, his meeting with microtonal music pionneer Wyschnegradsky in the 70ties was crucial for his aesthetic and his use of microtonal scales. As a pianist, he and his wife created many Wyschnegradsky's pieces notably . Ivan Alexandrovich Vïshnegradsky (1893-1979, also Wyschnegradsky) was a Russian composer primarily known for his microtonal compositions, including the quarter tone scale, though he used scales of up to 71 divisions. ... Alois H ba (June 21, 1893 - November 18, 1973) was a Czech composer primarily known for his microtonal compositions, especially using the quarter tone scale, though he used others such as sixth-tones and twelfth-tones. ... In his composition he still uses the famous wyschnegrasky principle of non-octavic spaces. He wrote many works using this technique and notably his famous "Poème du délire" (a tribute to Scriabine, an influencial figure for him and Wyschnegradsky.).His compositions are also influenced by his love of wine.
