BruceMines, as the name implies, was first established in 1846 as a copper mining community, employing skilled Cornish miners who had recently emigrated from England.
The BruceMines changed ownership several times between 1847 and 1944, when they were decommissioned.
Besides the restored Simpson copper mine shaft that can be toured, BruceMines offers a museum and marina for local visitors, as well as numerous events throughout the year, including the Four and Friends Art Show and Sale in July and the Fall Fair in September.
The town was founded in 1846 and named after James Bruce, the first Governor of the Province of Canada and the eighth Earl of Elgin.
The Simpson Mine Shaft is one of the many "BruceMines".
Take a guided tour through a section of the original mine shaft, reconstructed buildings(the horse whim), an assay office where they graded and tested the ore, exhibit of mining equipment and mineral displays, and an outdoor display of more recent mining machinery.
