After playing for the Clemson University Tigers, in a career that saw Bruce becoming the first Clemson player to finish a career with over 40 goals and 40 assists, he earned his first cap against England on June 16, 1985. His first national team goal came against Uruguay on February 7, 1986 as the two-time world cup winners were preparing for the 1986 World Cup. Bruce went on to play for the US during the 1988 Olympic Games, and become a mainstay in the line-up during World Cup Qualifying. Bruce went on to start all three games for the US at the 1990 World Cup, in the process scoring one goal and assisitng on the only other goal scored by the US in Italy. Only Brian McBride, and John O'Brien have recorded a goal and assist for the United States during the course of on World Cup finals.
