Bruning is a village located in Thayer County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 300.


Geography

Bruning is located at 40°20'8" North, 97°33'54" West (40.335675, -97.564883)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛). 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 300 people, 150 households, and 85 families residing in the village. The population density is 413.7/km˛ (1,070.6/mi˛). There are 162 housing units at an average density of 223.4/km˛ (578.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 150 households out of which 19.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.3% are non-families. 40.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 26.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.00 and the average family size is 2.71.


In the village the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 19.3% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 36.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 51 years. For every 100 females there are 78.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.8 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $30,972, and the median income for a family is $43,036. Males have a median income of $32,273 versus $19,135 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,148. 7.5% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.7% of those under the age of 18 and 9.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Bruning was just one of about 60 towns that came into being in Nebraska that year.
In Bruning's case, the people convinced the Lincoln Land Company that a town at this location was a "good investment." The land company's role was to lay out the town and arrange for a siding.
Not until Frank Bruning, Wilhelm Bruning, and H.J. Voss made several trips to Lincoln, and Frank went to Illinois to purchase the remaining 20 acres outright, were all requirements fulfilled.
