Encyclopedia > Bruno Zumino

Bruno Zumino is an Italian theoretical physicist and emeritus faculty at the University of California, Berkeley. He got his PhD from the University of Rome in 1945. He is famous for the discovery of Wess-Zumino model in supersymmetric quantum field theories and Wess-Zumino-Witten model in conformal field theories. Theoretical physics attempts to understand the world by making a model of reality, used for rationalizing, explaining, predicting physical phenomena through a physical theory. There are three types of theories in physics; mainstream theories, proposed theories and fringe theories. ... University of California, Berkeley The University of California, Berkeley (also known as the University of California at Berkeley or UC Berkeley) is the oldest campus of the ten-campus University of California system. ... There is no institution called the University of Rome, but there are several universities in Rome: University of Rome La Sapienza University of Rome Tor Vergata University of Roma Tre This is a disambiguation page — a navigational aid which lists other pages that might otherwise share the same title. ... In theoretical physics, the Wess-Zumino model has become the first known example of an interacting four-dimensional quantum field theory with supersymmetry, at least in the Western world. ... In particle physics, supersymmetry is a hypothetical symmetry that relates bosons and fermions. ... Quantum field theory (QFT) is the application of quantum mechanics to fields. ... In theoretical physics and mathematics, the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model, also called the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model, is a simple model of conformal field theory whose solutions are realized by affine Kac-Moody algebras. ... A conformal field theory is a quantum field theory (or statistical mechanics model) that is invariant under the conformal group. ...

Awards

Confusingly, there are two prominent awards in the field of theoretical physics and mathematics commonly known as the Dirac Prize, awarded by different organizations. ... Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics is an award given each year since 1959 jointly by American Physical Society and American Institute of Physics. ... The Max Planck medal is an award for extraordinary achievements in theoretical physics. ... The Wigner Medal is an award for outstanding contributions to the understanding of physics through group theory. It is awarded bi-annually by the Group Theory and Fundamental Physics Foundation. ...
