It is unclear when golf was first played in Edinburgh, however, the first edict prohibiting the playing of golf was issued in 1457. Additionally, the Golf Tavern which adjoins the links claims to have been founded in 1456, though there is little evidence for this other than a claim made in A history of the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society. A plaque erected by the City of Edinburgh suggests that the game of golf may have been invented here.
