Brussels has one school district, No. 42, which consists of one grade school (Brussels Grade School) and one high school (Brussels High School). The school district serves the surrounding communities of Meppen, Golden Eagle, and parts of Batchtown. In addition to the public school system Brussels is also home to a parochial grade school (St. Marys). Brussels High School is small and its population usually hovers at around 70 students. Located within the village limits of Brussels are two churches, one Lutheran (St. Matthews) and one Catholic (St. Marys). The congregation of St. Marys is larger than that of St. Matthews but both draw in parishioners from the surrounding communities. The town of Brussels contains a variety of options for dinning and nightlife. Brussels contains three establishments which serve food daily. These are AJs Tavern, Whittmond’s Hotel, and The Peach Tree. Both AJs and The Peach Tree serve the standard fare of any mom and pop restaurant, items such as hamburgers and french fries are typical but there is often a daily special. Whittmond’s serves dishes which include: open-faced roast beef, sausage, or fried chicken with a variety of sides. In addition to providing food, both AJs and Whittmond’s have bars that serve alcoholic beverages. Brussels also has Senger’s Too, a bar of the typical variety. The only other business of note within Brussels is the Red and White grocery store. This small locally owned store provides the community with a close location to purchase necessities without having to drive miles to the next closest store.
