Bryan Smolinski, nicknamed Smoke, is an American ice hockey player. He currently plays centre for the Ottawa Senators. Born December 27, 1971 in Toledo, Ohio, he grew up in suburban Northwest Ohio and was a star player with Michigan State. He was drafted 21st overall in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. After an impressive rookie season in 1993-94, Smolinski faltered somewhat the next year, and in the summer of 1995 was included alongside Glen Murray in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins that saw veteran star Kevin Stevens and Shawn McEachern come to Boston. Smolinski had a successful season as the third line centre for the star laden Penguins, but after the 1995-96 season Smolinski and the team could not agree on a new contract. Smolinksi sat out the start of the next season playing for the Detroit Vipers of the IHL. Eventually in November the General Manager Mike Milbury of the New York Islanders agreed to trade defenceman Darius Kasparaitis and rookie Andreas Johansson for the rights to Smolinksi. Smolinski has not dressed for Team USA in the first two games of the World Cup but should see action soon as changes in the lineup are anticipated in the wake of Team USA's 0-2 start to the tournament, the Associated Press reports.
Smolinski scored twice, including a clinching goal in the final minute, to help the Senators snap a five-game winless streak Tuesday night with a 5-3 victory over the Thrashers.
