Bryn Athyn is a borough located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 1,351.


Geography

Bryn Athyn is located at 40°8'22" North, 75°4'2" West (40.139539, -75.067169)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛). 4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,351 people, 377 households, and 292 families residing in the borough. The population density is 273.1/km˛ (706.5/mi˛). There are 381 housing units at an average density of 77.0/km˛ (199.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 96.82% White, 1.04% African American, 0.07% Native American, 1.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 377 households out of which 41.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.4% are married couples living together, 4.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.21 and the average family size is 3.76.


In the borough the population is spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 13.8% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $68,646, and the median income for a family is $76,214. Males have a median income of $48,958 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $32,737. 3.6% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Bryn Athyn is the site of Bryn Athyn Cathedral, the episcopal seat of the General Church of the New Jerusalem, an international Swedenborgian church.
It is also the site of the General Church affiliated Academy of the New Church, which publishes Swedenborgian literature, and is the parent organization of a high school, a four-year college (Bryn Athyn College of the New Church), a divinity school, and the Emanuel Swedenborg Library.
