Bryson City is a town located in Swain County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,411. It is the county seat of Swain County6.

Geography

Bryson City is located at 35°25'37" North, 83°26'52" West (35.426982, _83.447681)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.8 km˛ (2.2 mi˛). 5.5 km˛ (2.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 5.33% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,411 people, 588 households, and 323 families residing in the town. The population density is 255.8/km˛ (663.5/mi˛). There are 713 housing units at an average density of 129.2/km˛ (335.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 90.93% White, 1.98% African American, 4.96% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 588 households out of which 21.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.9% are non-families. 41.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.78.


In the town the population is spread out with 17.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 27.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 77.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $23,232, and the median income for a family is $31,875. Males have a median income of $26,528 versus $19,833 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,446. 19.2% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.4% of those under the age of 18 and 21.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
