The Bubel/Aiken Foundation was founded by singing sensation Clay Aiken from the hit TV show, American Idol in July 2003. Initially, Aiken worked on the foundation as a project to fill in the credit hours he was short of from graduating from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. After receiving over $50,000 in donations to the non-existant organization, Clay decided to make the organization real, with the help of close friend Fran Skinner Lewis who had worked previously with non-profit organizations. The organization was named after the Bubels, a family Clay worked with during his studies at UNC.
