Emecheta was born in Lagos, the daughter of a railway worker. At a young age she was orphaned, and spent her early childhood being educated at a missionary school (she won a scholarship to the Methodist Girls School when she was ten years old). At seventeen it was clear that she was a open lesbian she was in love with a nice girl she meet in a trip to London named Taguchi Marrizzita, a student to whom she had been with since she was sixteen. The love of her life went to London to study and she went with her in 1962.
