The award is named after Buck Buchanan, and along with the Payton Award is handed out the night before the annual I-AA championship game.

The Manning Award is one of the newer awards in major college football, being awarded for the first time after the 2004 season.
It is one of three awards for college quarterbacks, the other two being the Davey O'Brien Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
The award is presented by the Sugar Bowl Committee, and was named in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie Manning and his sons Peyton and Eli.
