Buckhead Ridge is a census-designated place located in Glades County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,390. The town consists of a few small commercial developments and a large mobile home park. Most residential lots in the community back up on canals that feed into Lake Okeechobee.


Geography

Buckhead Ridge is located at 27°7'51" North, 80°53'28" West (27.130819, _80.891041)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.7 km˛ (1.4 mi˛). 3.4 km˛ (1.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 7.09% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,390 people, 694 households, and 465 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 412.8/km˛ (1,066.3/mi˛). There are 1,149 housing units at an average density of 341.3/km˛ (881.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.35% White, 0.14% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 694 households out of which 8.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.00 and the average family size is 2.33.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 9.9% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 12.3% from 25 to 44, 31.2% from 45 to 64, and 43.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 62 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.6 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $26,406, and the median income for a family is $28,047. Males have a median income of $36,563 versus $25,726 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,475. 19.4% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.0% of those under the age of 18 and 18.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Buckhead is a community with official boundaries adopted by the Georgia House of Representatives, the only such model in the state.
Annexed from Fulton County into the city of Atlanta in 1952, Buckhead is bordered by DeKalb county on the east, the Atlanta city limits on the north, Cobb County on the west and Peachtree Creek from the Chattahoochee River to Interstates 75/85 on the south.
