Poile was born in Fort William, Ontario in 1924. He began his career in 1942 as an 18- year-old right wing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. His playing career would include stops in Boston, Chicago, and New York. He finished playing with the WHL's Edmonton Flyers in 1955.
