The name Honvéd (literally "defender of the homeland") was chosen in the early 1950s when the club was dominated by the Hungarian Ministry of Defence and the Hungarian Army and was named Budapesti Honvéd. The football team was a leader before 1956 revolution in Hungary. The team won national football championships several times.
