Buddhi is characterized by discrimination (viveka), voluntary restraint (vairagya), cultivation of calmness (shanti), contentment (santosha) and forgiveness (kshama).
Buddhi uses manas as its garment, and in the former are likewise stored the fruitages of the many incarnations on earth; hence buddhi is often called both the seed and flower of manas.
In the human constitution buddhi is a ray from the cosmic principle mahabuddhi or adi-buddhi, a synonym for alaya, pradhana, or the Second Logos, while akasa in its higher reaches is identic with alaya.
Buddhi stands to the divine Root Essence in the same relation as Mulaprakriti to Parabrahman, in the Vedanta School; or as Alaya, the Universal Soul, to the One Eternal Spirit, or that which is beyond Spirit.
Since buddhi is considered to be an aspect of self-awareness with which the self is entwined, in the same way that manas is the self entwined in the matrix of mental reality.
Buddhi in the human spirit is the pure and compassionate Reason, which is the Wisdom Aspect, the Christ in man. In the normal course of evolution, the buddhic consciousness will be gradually unfolded in the six sub-race of the Fifth Root Race, and still more so in the Sixth Root Race itself.
