Buena Vista County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 20,411. Its county seat is Storm Lake, Iowa6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,502 km˛ (580 mi˛). 1,489 km˛ (575 mi˛) of it is land and 14 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.91% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,411 people, 7,499 households, and 5,121 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km˛ (36/mi˛). There are 8,145 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (14/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 88.00% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 4.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 5.75% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 12.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,499 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.50% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.70% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 12.20% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $35,300, and the median income for a family is $41,549. Males have a median income of $29,172 versus $20,252 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,042. 10.50% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.60% of those under the age of 18 and 7.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
