The film documents how Ry Cooder, long-time friend of Wenders, brought together legendary Cuban musicians to record a CD of the same name, and to perform a concert in the USA. Although geographically close, travel between Cuba and the USA is restricted due to the political tension between the two countries, so many of the artists were travelling there for the first time. The film shows their reactions to this experience, as well as including footage of the resultant sell-out concert. It also includes touching interviews with each of the main performers. The main thrust of Buena Vista Social Club, from what I can gather from the film, is that American musician Ry Cooder traveled to Cuba to meet a friend and discuss plans to record music by some local talents.
And Buena Vista Social Club The Movie is born.
The movie itself is composed of terrific music played by the musicians, live and recorded, and cuts between a concert by the Club in Amsterdam and the musicians back in Cuba among the people, in their homes, and around the city.

Younger than the bulk of the Buena Vista musical family (born in 1954), he nevertheless has a direct lineage to the greatness of the golden era rendered in the film and on the various Buena Vista albums.
Ry Cooder met her in Havana before the sessions for Buena Vista, and the following year, during the legendary sessions, Omara happened to be recording at EGREM Studios at the same time.
One of the many unforgettable musical moments on The Buena Vista Social Club album is “Barbarito” Torres’ laúd solo on “El Cuarto de Tula.” The laúd is a 12-string instrument of the lute family, emitting, especially on its high register, a piercing, metallic tone that is perfect for fast, single-note improvising.
