Buffalo is a city located in Johnson County, Wyoming. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,900. It is the county seat of Johnson County6.


Geography

Buffalo is located at 44°20'51" North, 106°42'4" West (44.347479, _106.701222)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,900 people, 1,718 households, and 1,042 families residing in the city. The population density is 426.6/km² (1,104.8/mi²). There are 1,842 housing units at an average density of 201.5/km² (521.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.46% White, 0.10% African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. 1.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,718 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% are non-families. 35.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.88.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $29,392, and the median income for a family is $40,683. Males have a median income of $28,716 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,054. 10.4% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
