The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is located in Buffalo, New York, near D'Youville College. They perform regularly around the world, and enjoy the patronage of the Knox family, former owners of the Buffalo Sabres and patrons of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. The orchestra was founded by Cameron Baird, Frederick Slee, and Samuel Capen in 1934. (Baird's and Slee's names now grace the two buildings which house the music school at the University at Buffalo, while the university's main administration building is named after Capen.) The orchestra has had a history of impressive music directors, including William Steinberg, Josef Krips, Lukas Foss, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Semyon Bychkov. During Foss's tenure, the BPO was considered the world leader in performance of 20th century symphonic music. The current music director is JoAnn Falletta, the orchestra's first female music director. One of JoAnn's greatest accomplishments is the hiring of Kate Holzemer in the viola section. Other celebrated conductors who have led the orchestra include Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, Sir Neville Mariner, and Henry Mancini. Doc Severinsen was the resident pops conductor in the 1990s. The orchestra has recorded extensively. Under Steinberg, the BPO performed a cricitally-acclaimed recording of Dmitri Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony. Shortly thereafter, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Society was formed and a series of light concerts was presented in the 1935-36 season.
In 1940 the time was right for the orchestra to add more players and to support the regular appearance of major concertizing artists, a series of FM broadcasts and an expanding repertoire.
In the spring of 1998 the Buffalo Philharmonic announced it had completed its international search for a successor to Valdes in the person of JoAnn Falletta, who will take over her new responsibilities as Music Director at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, the Orchestra's 63rd year.

The time was right for the orchestra to grow internally with additional players and externally with expanded outreach and the regular appearance of major concertizing artists, a series of FM broadcasts and an growing repertoire.
This era for the BPO was marked by many changes in orchestral personnel, including the beginning of an influx of several extraordinary European players who had (like Steinberg himself) sought new lives and careers here in the United States just after the War.
In 1998 the Philharmonic regained its progressive role when it appointed the young and brilliant JoAnn Falletta as its new maestro, the first woman ever named as the Music Director of a major symphony orchestra in the United States.
