Encyclopedia > Buffer stop

A Buffer stop is a device to prevent railway vehicles from going past the end of a section of track.

The design of the bufferstop depends in part on the kind of couplings that the railway uses, since the [[coupling (railway)|coupling) is the part of the vehicle that the buffer stop first touches.

The term buffer stop is an English term as its railways use buffer and chain couplings.

This "Buffer Stop" is a rectangular shaped piece of thick rubber that actually attaches to the front of the X-Brace toward the front of the car.
With all that being said, the purpose of the Buffer Stop is to eliminate this positive pitch condition.
The Buffer Stop limits the drive-line's mis-alignment by stopping or buffering the engine from twisting and lifting (due to its torque) beyond a certain point as referenced by where the Buffer Stop is mounted on the X-Brace.
