Personality and Relationships

Buggy often feigns intelligence, only to have his true incompetence revealed. Although he is not "stupid" in the traditional sense, he is prone to gross misjudgments that often cost him - usually this is due to his overconfidence. In the original Japanese version of One Piece, he inserts the word hade, which means "flashy" or "gaudy" into almost every sentence he speaks (Die with flash! You flashy  !).

The big, red nose on his face is, in fact, his real nose; something he is very touchy about, going so far as to destroy an entire town when a couple of kids made fun of it. Occasionally, he will mishear what others say as an insult about him or his nose, possibly due to paranoia. For other senses of this word, see paranoia (disambiguation). ...

He has a number of running gags in the series, including his habit of not noticing who he is speaking to until moments after greeting him (for example, when Ace appeared on his ship, Buggy first greets him politely. Then, when he realizes he is on his ship, he blurts out 'Who the hell are you?'). He also has what some might consider 'dumb luck'; no matter what happens to him he is lucky enough to survive somehow (including being struck by lightning at Loguetown). Portgas D. Ace , Portgaz D. Trace in the 4Kids version of the anime, Ace in the Funimation version) is the older brother of Monkey D. Luffy. ... The Loguetown arc is the sixth and final story arc in the East Blue Saga of the anime and manga, One Piece. ...

Buggy is one of the few villains to become reformed after facing Luffy, though only slightly. Before his loss he was willing to use his crew as human shields, afterwards he shows a lot more care about their well being. He also begins to accept people's kindness, though he can still be cruel to anyone who isn't a member of his crew or aiding him in his goals. He also is fun loving and displays a huge fondness for parties, admiring those who are equally fun loving (strangely, he shares this trait with Shanks). Monkey D. Luffy ) is a fictional character and leading protagonist in the anime and manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. ...

Buggy is deeply afraid of Whitebeard and knows him from his days as a pirate apprentice when his captain's crew and Whitebeard's crew were always fighting. He even stopped his crew from attacking Ace for the fear of Whitebeard's wrath.

His primary goal right now is revenge against Luffy, for defeating him, and Shanks for ruining his dreams during his youth. But he doesn't let these goals get in the way of hunting for treasure or partying.

History

The Bitter Grudge

Buggy holds a bitter grudge against Red-Haired Shanks over the matter of his Devil Fruit curse. In their youth, both men were pirates under Gold Roger and constantly argued over everything imaginable (in the flashback in the manga and the anime alike, they argue over whether the North or South Pole is colder). During a raid on an enemy ship, Buggy found a treasure map marking the location of a valuable underwater treasure; during the same raid, the crew retrieved a Devil Fruit: Bara Bara no Mi (バラバラの実 Chop Chop Fruit). Told of the fruit's value, Buggy switched the real fruit with a fake, and then ate the fake in front of the crew so he could sell the fruit which was worth a good amount of money. But, while privately gloating with both the map and the fruit in his possession, Buggy was surprised by Shanks; he hid the fruit in his mouth, and before he could remove it, Shanks surprised him again and he swallowed it - forever losing the ability to swim, and thus also losing his chance to get the treasure underwater.[1] Red-Haired Shanks ) is a fictional character in the One Piece manga and anime. ...

They were both present during Gold Roger's execution. After refusing Shank's offer to join his crew, they separated ways and have not seen each other since.[2]

in Port Town

Buggy's first appearance in the series had him terrorizing a town named "Port Town", taking out random buildings with cannonballs (including his special "Buggy Balls", one of which is capable of taking out entire blocks). Monkey D. Luffy happened to fall into the village when Buggy shot down a passing seabird that was attempting to eat him. After Nami (who had robbed Buggy of a map of the Grand Line) double-crossed both Luffy and Buggy in that order, he set about trying to kill both of them. During his battle with Luffy, Nami stole and tied up his separate body parts, leaving him with just his head, hands and feet - and leaving him helpless to stop Luffy from beating him and sending him flying away using his Gomu Gomu no Bazooka attack. After losing his battle with Luffy, Buggy was separated from his body parts for a long period of time. He found himself on various adventures (as depicted in the "Buggy: After The Battle" title page story arc), one of which had him meeting up with Gaimon. After leaving Gaimon's island, Buggy was attacked by a giant crab - and then saved by a mysterious, beautiful woman who turned out to be Luffy's old foe, Alvida. Learning that Luffy now had a price on his head, Buggy was more than happy to join forces with Alvida. The following is a list of minor characters in One Piece: Spoiler warning: // Ace (Portgas D.) Buggy's Revenge

The two pirates found Buggy's Band, which had fallen into ruin under the command of Richie, Mohji's pet lion. Reunited with his body parts, Buggy pulled his crew out of trouble and resumed hunting after Luffy.

The second battle between the two crews took place in Roguetown, where Buggy's Band attempted to execute Monkey D. Luffy. Buggy and Alvida's plans were thwarted due in part to the marines, various pirates and rather unlucky weather (which may or may not have been caused by Dragon).

Currently Buggy is sailing the Grand Line with Alvida and his crew and has met up with Portgas D. Ace who has promised to show him the way to Luffy. Buggy in his youth also crossed paths with Whitebeard's crew; Whitebeard remembers Buggy because of his nose and his affiliation with Shanks. This is most likely the reason he is kind to Ace and shows great fear of Whitebeard. [3] Portgas D. Ace , Portgaz D. Trace in the 4Kids version of the anime, Ace in the Funimation version) is the older brother of Monkey D. Luffy. ...

Abilities

Buggy accidentally consumed the Bara Bara no Mi, (Chop Chop fruit) a Devil Fruit (Cursed Fruit in the English anime), which allows him to separate his body parts and control them independent of each other, but robbed him of the ability to swim. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to attacks from knives or swords; any such attack just separates him into his component parts. A Devil Fruit, (悪魔の実, Akuma no Mi) is a fictional fruit from the manga and anime series of One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. ...

In addition, most of his body is capable of flying through the air, fast enough to propel a man through a wall - with the crucial exception of his feet. However, even though the parts are separate, Buggy can still feel what the part feels (for example, when Luffy attacked Buggy, he separated his torso from his waist, only to find that Luffy was aiming for the crotch. Needless to say this left him with a rather painful result. Also when Buggy launched his hand out to pin down Zoro for Cabaji's Sting of the Unicycle Technique, Luffy stomped on it, inflicting tremendous pain). He also seems to require either a fixed distance from his detachments, or keep them within his line of vision, in order to manipulate them separately.

Besides his Devil fruit abilities he usually fights with three knives between his fingers. During the flashbacks of his youth he already used these three knives. He also has a blade hidden in his shoe and in Rogue Town used a sword in his failed attempt to execute Luffy.

Trivia

  • Buggy was originally going to be called "Boogie", however, Oda discovered the name already taken and therefore changed it to "Buggy".
  • One of Oda's more mature SBS questions asked if Buggy's penis was able to split and fly off. Oda replied 'yes' as every part of Buggy's body could fly off.[4]
  • Another SBS question regarding Buggy's blue hair revealed that the pirate captain's hair is styled into a pair of pigtails.
  • In an interview for Shonen Jump, Oda once stated Buggy was his favorite villain.
  • In the manga, Buggy is never shown with his mouth shut as he's always seen talking, yelling or laughing. Oda drew him with his mouth shut after the pose was specifically requested by an SBS contributor.
  • In the tradition of unique laughs in One Piece, Buggys' laugh is often wheezy and high pitched.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Buggy's Band of Pirates (3416 words)
Buggy the Clown is the captain of the Buggy Band of Pirates.
After Buggy's crew was defeated by Luffy, he fought with the 'other' first mate Mohji for the title for the next captain--both were knocked out by a sleepwalking Richie, who gained the title (though lost it just as quick).
Buggy's flag is a standard Jolly Roger with two fl slashes on the eyes from the top to bottom and to the left and right, as well as a large red clown nose simliar to Buggy's.
Clown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (4438 words)
Though not every clown is readily identifiable by appearance alone, clowns frequently appear in makeup and costume, as well as typically unusually large footwear, oversized or otherwise outlandish clothing, big or otherwise unusual nose, and enacting humorous sketches, usually in the interludes between major presentations.
The clown of this era and eras previous to it were also associated with jugglers, who were seen as the pariahs of society alongside actors, prostitutes and lepers, and thus (at least in Europe) wore stripes, or motley - cloth associated with marginalised people such as the condemned, with strong associations of the devil.
Clowns are also notoriously lucky, to the degree that many superstitions are inverted with a clown, and curses placed against a clown will inevitably benefit the clown and curse the curser.
